MEDIA RELEASE - A VOTE FOR THE LIBERALS IS A VOTE TO CUT THE ABC - 7 MAY 2019

07 May 2019

The newly appointed ABC Managing Director has warned  Scott Morrison’s unfair $83.7 million cut to the ABC will mean job losses and content disruption.

This election is a clear choice. Australians can have a strong and independent ABC under Labor, or a Liberal Government. They cannot have both.

This means that if the Liberal Government is returned, it is “inevitable” that their cuts will undermine the national broadcaster over the next three years.

That is why Labor has committed to reverse the unfair cut of $83.7 million and has guaranteed funding certainty to the ABC over the next budget cycle.

The Liberals and Nationals came to government on the promise of no cuts to the ABC. That was a lie.

After six years of lies, cuts and chaos, the Liberals go into this election with yet more ABC cuts to come.

The Liberals used the ABC as a bargaining chip in a deal with Pauline Hanson’s One Nation; and they passed a motion to privatise the ABC at the Liberal Party Federal Council. Their record speaks for itself.

Only a Shorten Labor Government will support and maintain the ABC as our independent and comprehensive national broadcaster - never to be privatised.

End the chaos and cuts. Vote for change. Vote for Labor.
