MEDIA RELEASE - LABOR MEMBERS VOTE TO NEVER PRIVATISE THE ABC - 3 JULY 2018

03 July 2018

With Stephen Jones MP, Shadow Minister for Regional Communications.

At its State Conference today, NSW Labor voted unanimously in support of a motion that Labor will never privatise the ABC.

On the weekend of the 86th birthday of the ABC, NSW Labor:

  • formally affirmed Labor’s commitment to strong and independent public broadcasting; and
  • endorsed the commitment that a Shorten Labor Government would reverse Turnbull’s $83.7 million unfair cut to the ABC and guarantee funding certainty over the next ABC budget cycle.

In direct contrast to the Federal Liberal Council’s motion to privatise the ABC, today’s vote of NSW Labor confirms that Labor will never privatise the ABC.

Labor believes that the ABC is one of the most important institutions in our democracy and society.

The difference could not be clearer. Labor believes in public broadcasting and the Liberals do not.

Labor puts people and the services they rely on first. The Liberals only look after big business and the banks.

The only way to save the ABC is to change the government.
