NBN LEAKS: COPPER ROLLOUT NEARLY THREE TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN WHAT LIBERAL MODELLING PROMISED

A report today has revealed the full extent of how the Liberals misled Australians to justify their abandonment of fibre technology in favour of inferior copper and cable.

The report, based on redacted figures Minister Fletcher fought desperately to conceal, revealed:
  • The deployment of second-rate copper over the NBN has cost up to three times more than originally forecast;
  • Coalition modelling assumed cost of deploying copper Fibre to the Node technology would be $650 per premises, despite now costing $2,330; and
  • Coalition modelling assumed cost of using the ageing HFC pay-TV cable networks would be between $800 and $850 per premises, despite now costing $2,752 per premises.
The cost of the Coalition’s multi-technology scam is now $57 billion.

Previous leaks have shown Labor’s original fibre rollout would have been delivered for less than $53 billion once real-world interest rates were fed back into the Coalition’s own “modelling”, which used every trick in the book to inflate the cost of a fibre rollout.

Whether it’s Scott Morrison or Paul Fletcher or any other embattled minister, this decade-old Coalition Government cannot be trusted when it comes to the economics of technology.

They will mislead you every time. That’s what the Coalition does.
