GREATER TRANSPARENCY NEEDED ON CAUSES OF NBN SATELLITE OUTAGE

The cause of an NBN Satellite outage on 21 December 2021, which continued to impact some households for nearly three weeks, needs to be made clear and transparent.

The incident initially disconnected 38,000 households and businesses – roughly one in three NBN satellite connections nationally.

Subsequent to the widespread outage, which NBNCo resolved, there remained over 600 premises with no service until 6 January with retail providers reporting to be inadequately informed about the cause of the ongoing problems.

Reliable communications infrastructure is not a luxury or a nice-to-have.

It is essential 21st century infrastructure, and for many families in regional and remote Australians it is also a matter of safety.

NBNCo needs to outline the root causes of the outage, including what factors were within the company’s control, what factors were outside their control, and what lessons have been learned which will reduce prolonged outage risks in the future.

This is an important step towards ensuring households, businesses, and retail providers have improved confidence in the future management and mitigation of satellite outages.
